Why a new Law?
TheTranssexuellengesetz (Transsexual Law), introduced in 1980, regulated how trans* people can legally change their name and gender entry in Germany for 44 years. However, this law did not live up to its claims. Instead, obstacles were put in the way of trans* people:The process of changing name and gender entry required two independent psychological assessments and a court hearing. This was discriminatory, took forever and was very expensive. The Self-Determination Law replaced the TSG and made it easy to change name and gender entry by self-disclosure at the Standesamt (registry office).
